Baton Rouge is the capital of Louisiana and a great pet friendly city. There are tons of pet friendly hotels in Baton Rouge along, along with many, inns b&bs, restaurants, bars and parks. And not only do they love dogs (CAAWS Mystic Krew of Mutts Parade every February), they also love cats. Big cats. We’re referring to Mike the Tiger, who is the mascot for the LSU football team (the only live tiger mascot in the country). Lest you think that might be cruel, Mike VII has his own beautiful habitat behind the stadium and lives better than most of us. During game time, though, it’s rumored that he is strategically placed near the opposing team’s locker room as a bit of intimidation—Purr-ty clever don’t you think? And he also supposedly roars on every LSU touchdown. Baton Rouge also loves birds. Wooden Pink Flamingos, which are the mascot for Baton Rouge’s Mardi Gras and are prized possessions during the parade. Also, Baton Rouge loves White Pelicans (real ones) which stop over for a few weeks in November and December on their winter migration.

But it's domesticated pet dogs and cats that Baton Rouge really welcome when tourists and business people alike come to visit with their pets. And visit they do. Over 4 million visitors in 2016. For those that bring their pets, there’s lots a places to see. Beyond the pet friendly hotels in Baton Rouge (listed below) there are plenty of other places to visit with your favorite four-legged friend in tow. If great beer is your thing (notice we get to the beer places first) then you can head over to The Bulldog which has, count’em, 81 beers on tap, along with 200 bottled beers. And your money will be well spent because a part of the proceeds from their Thursday Yappy Hour goes to animal-related charities to help local pets find homes. Or if you’re looking for some authentic Louisiana dishes such as crawfish etouffee, chargrilled oysters and po’ boys, you can head over The Chimes East which has an outdoor seating area.
If you want some outdoor exercise with your dog, you can check out Independence Community Park or the Highland Road Community Park. Dogs must be on leash at these parks. However, if it’s off-leash fun you’d prefer, you can visit the Dog Park at Burbank Sports Complex, which is a 6-acre park that has large and small dog play areas, as well as a dog walk and water station. And, because we love the name, there are four dog parks named Raising Cane (after Raising Cane’s Chicken Finger restaurant.)
Going anywhere in Louisiana is always amazing and interesting because of the varied Cajun, Creole and French mashup. This unique combination produces great music, food and a fun-loving (aka pet-loving) citizenry. So you might as well hit its pet friendly capital first with your best buddy. You will both be glad you did.
